 How healthy is Ketogenic diet

There is solid evidence which show that practicing Ketogenic diet could reduce in children, sometimes it is as effective as medication. Due to these positive neuroprotective effects, questions have been raised regarding the possibility of Ketogenic diet's benefit for other form of brain disorders such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, autism, sleep disorder and even brain cancer. Nonetheless, there are not yet any attempts on human studies that support recommending ketosis to treat these conditions.


In addition to that, Ketogenic diet also has been shown to be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes, at least in the short term because it improve blood sugar control. However, there is more controversy when looking at the effect on cholesterol levels. Some studies show that some patients experience an increase in their cholesterol levels in the beginning of their diet but the cholesterol levels fall few months later. Nonetheless, there is still no long-term research that analyzes Ketogenic diet effects over time high cholesterol and diabetes.


In terms of weight loss, previous research shows good evidence of a quicker weight loss when attempting Ketogenic diet or very low carbohydrate diet compared to those who attempt traditional low-fat diet or even a Mediterranean diet. However the research also shows that the difference in weight loss seems to reduce over time.
